Things have really been shaking up in current events. Billy Preston and Vince Welnick both left this physical plane. In other news, 6/6/06 came and went with little to no chaos or apocolyptic carnage...or at least none worth talking about. President Bush, in an attempt to distract the public or at least bring the evangelical vote back to the Republicans, called for a re-opening of the debate about the definition of marriage in the United States. The Senate voted today that this is not a subject of great importance given that our armed forces are fighting a war on two different fronts.

Tonight, we featured some tunes from Billy Preston and Vince Welnick in their places with The Beatles and The Grateful Dead, some editorial from Lewis Black on gay marriage, and plenty of great music including a full set from The Other Ones.

Loose Logic Set 4/12-13/06

I had the chance to check out the new building for KEOS at 202 Carson Street yesterday (4/12), and after further inspection, I have to say that I'm really impressed with this diamond in the rough we found to compliment our own diamond in the rough-ness. However, it's going to require a lot of work. Work that KEOS volunteers will put in, but I would also like to encourage the community to help us with this effort for moving. The faster we get out of our current place, the faster we can move into the new building. In the coming weeks, I will give you details on what kind of work we need to have done before moving into our new building and a time frame for when we expect this to be done. If you think you'll be able to help, please let me know and we'll let you help to your heart's content. Remember, though, that this is a volunteer gig, but by volunteering your time and sweat, you'll be helping us build a stronger community radio station.

Sunday Morning Sidewalk 3/19/06

Today, the plan for the show was that there was no plan for the show. Today was also my first appearance for the Spring Fund Drive. We did well, I think...well, better than I've done on Sunday Morning Sidewalk during a pledge drive.

A word on pledge drives. As much as you don't like hearing people beg for money on the radio, I don't particularly care to beg. I mean, I really wish we had a patron donor that could take care of all of our funds needed to run the station, but we have no such entity. Until we do, we'll have to have pledge drives. I feel like everyone gets stressed out during these two weeks, both listeners and programmers. I know the last 3 pledge drives, I've felt like calling this gig quits and leaving KEOS altogether due to lack of interest or at least, lack of pledges. I do feel that The Loose Logic Set would work more sucessfully in other cities...to coin a phrase from Dylan...I'm stuck in College Station with the Austin blues again.

I mean, he was really shocked that he couldn't escape the press and their questions for once...you know, kinda how he does in Washington in the form of pre-written questions submitted to him. whew...

I've got to get someone to take over doing the morning news switchover for me at the radio station. You see...the Loose Logic Set runs until around 2 am Thursday morning. I get home and fall into bed as soon as I get in...with that warm stining of wearyness floating on my eyeballs. After all that, I have to get up and back to KEOS to turn on the BBC news. I don't mind doing it, but I'm losing a day at the office as a result. At least I'm not losing two days like when I was on mornings.

The first set of songs was dedicated to Molly, who hosted Space Oddity: a show that featured David Bowie and interesting facts about space related stuff.

Since the relief efforts were so strongly underway here in the Brazos Valley for the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, I thought I'd do a Blues/New Orleans themed show. I was really happy to hear that so many people had given so much to the relief efforts here that the distribution centers were overflowing with supplies. This, I think, is part of what it means to be an American, you know. We help everyone, but when it comes to our own citizens, the throw our whole selves into it.

The first set of Sunday's show was dedicated to the memory of bluesman R.L. Burnside who died on Thursday morning. Fare thee well.

Today's second hour was dedicated to the memory of the late Robert Moog (1934 - 2005). If it weren't for him, R2-D2, Particle, and a load of great synthesizer music would have never been made...well maybe it would have been made, but it wouldn't have sounded the same, that's for sure.

On August 23rd, 700 years ago, William Wallace was executed by the English. It's important to remember that in his native Scotland, he was seen as a champion of justice, a hero, but to the English, he was no more than a brigand, an insurgent...and even a terrorist. It's interesting how a cultural shift can color our perceptions of people. It's something that we should be aware of in our everyday lives in the interactions we have with all kinds of people, and it was Tuesday's "Something to think about".

Who's this you ask?

Good question, and it has an interesting answer. Robert Moog was one of the pioneers of synthesizer music. His Moog Synthesizer was used to make the sounds of R2-D2 in Star Wars and Steve Molitz of Particle uses a Moog Synthesizer for all those wild keyboard effects among other instances that you might have heard his synthesizers at work.

He will be missed, but his legacy will live on.

So it begins...

The re-tooling of my sleep schedule is beginning. I've also been working on my syllabus and lecture notes for the class that has forced me into this situation. I say forced, and that could be read as an unwillingness to move to mornings, but it's not really like that at all. I have found that waking up in the early morning leaves me with more time to do stuff during the day. Yeah, it's a simple concept, but it's amazing how the simple solution will often escape us.

Tracing a random throught

This past weekend was pretty busy for me. Didn't really get a chance to completely let go until Sunday. That isn't to say it wasn't fun, just that it took a lot out of me.

So start out on Thursday evening. Had some last minute paperwork to attend to at the university before my folks came in for the weekend, so I got home quickly to prepare some enchilladas for them (Thanks to Leann for showing this to me. Hey, I think I might have improved it though, tell me if you're interested.). Anyway, it was a good meal and we sat and talked for a little while before going to bed. I took the futon.

I woke up early to get to the university to turn in that paperwork before heading off to the graduation ceremony. At the last moment I realized that I didn't bring any reading material for the graduation ceremony, so I picked up a pen and a couple of pieces of paper to doodle on while I was out going through this useless gesture to bring some sense of pride to my folks. This is what I came up with when it was all said and done. Also played chess on my cell phone when the diplomas were being handed out. Bastard ingravers made an error with mine so I have a form in the tube my diploma was supposed to be in...bummer...total bummer. Have to get this form into the A&M offices over near the metro center which is located in Bryan. Maybe I'll take care of that tomorrow after the show. At any rate, here's what I drew during the ceremony.

So, instead of doing the "proud graduate" picture with my folks, I charged right back to the psychology building to make sure this paperwork went through then headed directly back to my place. We met Heather later that afternoon for lunch, and then went out to the Grimes County Fairgrounds for The 2005 Navasota Blues Festival. That was a blast, but maybe too much of one seeing as how I was pretty tired when I left there. Sleeping on the futon wasn't always the best way to get rest. I switched between the recliner and the futon to get a reasonable amount of sleep.

Saturday, we toured the older buildings on the Texas A&M campus. I headed out for a show I had agreed to tape a while back then came home for some sleep. Basically just vegged out all day yesterday. After one rollercoaster of a week, that was exactly what the doctor ordered.

Sunday Morning Sidewalk 8/7/05

There has been some confusion as to who takes the first Sunday of the month in our rotating show, Sunday Morning Sidewalk. After dancing all night at the KEOS fund drive finale, I was pretty sore when I came into the studio on Sunday morning. Started out as a pretty pedestrian kinda show, nothing really special, but it turned into a pretty fun experience overall.

As to who fills the first Sunday slot from now on, our old friend Mark Purcell, originator or the Sunday Morning Sidewalk radio show, is coming back and will be taking over for the first Sunday and for many first Sundays to come, hopefully.

The End of the Loose Logic Set...

It is with much regret that I have to inform you that The Loose Logic Set is a thing of the past...at least for the moment.

In this upcoming semester, I have to teach a 9 a.m. Intro to Psychology class on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Seeing as how doing a show till 2 a.m. usually puts me in the mood to sleep till 9 a.m., things have got to change for my job's sake.

However, I am not leaving the station completely. In an attempt to transform myself into a morning person, I have asked to take over the Thursday Eclectic Coffeehouse slot. The negotiations with the management team are still in the works (i.e. They haven't given me the go-ahead to take on the Thursday slot), but I will also be on the Tuesday Eclectic Coffeehouse as usual since I took the slot out of a guilt trip e-mail a couple of months back. For those who liked Touchstone Radio, I am trying to work out a deal to get that back on the air as well.

Again, The Loose Logic Set is not leaving because of poor fund drive response. After all, we did have one pledge last night, and I'm grateful for that. But while I'm on the subject, where were the rest of you slackers!? I mean, if you had called in to say, "Hey, man, I don't have any cash. You know how it goes", then I would have felt a little better about the whole thing. Oh well...didn't get anything during the Eclectic Coffeehouse slots either. The only reason I got anything the last fund drive is because I cohersed people into giving a little outside of the normal begging on the air. I'm starting to think that if this music can't earn cash for the station on its own merits, then I should just take it off the air completely and we can all slack together over at my place and listen to it. At least it would be without any form of commercial interruption whatsoever.

So as you can probably gather from the mood of this post, I'm kinda blue today because I played some of the newest and finest stuff in my collection and received no green. On the air, I got a little red in the face. Not that you could see it, but you could probably hear it in the dark tone of my voice. Just remember that if KEOS blacks-out all you'll ever hear at 89.1 FM in College Station and Bryan will be white noise.

Can I make a confession?

I am close to burnout. and nothing brings me there more than fund drive season. Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm supposed to be excited about fund drive, but folks I am close to being worn out. I've never been that much of a salesman anyway, and now I walk into the studio and there's like ump-teen (it's a Mississippi number...falls somewhere after several, but before a mess) fliers in the studio saying, do this, and say that, and...and...and...

"ARUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!"

to quote Howard Dean.

I mean, I felt like I was in that Albert Hitchcock movie The Birds where the kids are in the schoolroom looking out at all the birds gathering around the schoolhouse. In case you didn't follow, I was the kid inside the schoolhouse and the fliers were the birds.

Despite doing what all the signs said to do, no funds poured in. Fund drives always seem to bring out the inner panhandlers in each of the programmers at the station, but like I said, I've never been much of a salesman, and my inner panhandler perfers to listen to music than to beg for change. Yeah, my inner panhandler sucks at panhandling, but man does he love music.

Brokedown Logic Set 6/30-7/1/05

As much as I enjoyed doing the Brokedown Logic Set, a fusion of the Loose Logic Set and our Grateful Dead show, Brokedown Palace, it really wore me out. Five hours in the hotseat of any radio station is pretty intense, but the edge is knocked off if you get to play the tunes you like for the people you like. Fortunately the edge is always knocked off as far as I'm concerned.

Paul is a Marine major that recently returned from a 7 month tour in Iraq. His "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" mentality about lobbyists and special interest groups might just be what the doctor ordered for all this partisan bickering.

Hemp: the fiber of a green generation...

The threat to cotton is on the rise with a new bill introduced to the U.S. Congress legalizing the growth of industrial hemp in the United States for the first time since World War II. The bill was introduced on Thursday June 23rd, but no word as of yet as to whether it has come to a vote. This might just be the opportunity our embattled farmers and textile workers have been looking for.

Oh, but isn't hemp the same as marijuana!? No, friend, industrial hemp contains 1/3rd of 1% of the THC contained in marijuana. In other words, even if you smoked a bushel of hemp, you wouldn't get high. This stuff is the schwaggiest of the schwag, no way it could get you high. By the way, the hops that are in your beer...the plant they come from is related to the marijuana plant as well. Just thought you might like to know before you go out and get your schwagg-ass Budwiesers.

The benefits? Well, fabrics made with hemp are much stronger at manufacture than cotton fabrics, and fabrics made with hemp are more durable. In addition to fabrics, hemp can be used for a variety of other great pro-society uses like for paper, soaps, heady jewelry, ropes (most of the mooring ropes on the Navy's boats in WWII were made of hemp), etc. . Of course, not throwing out all that worn out crap will cut down on solid waste production because you won't be throwing nearly as much stuff out as often as you're used to.

The liabilities? Longer lasting materials are the bane of the corporatocracy. They're counting on you buying cheap, easily breakable stuff, so they can, in turn, sell you more useless, cheap, easily breakable stuff. You see, using long lasting mareials cuts at the profit margin two ways. First, better materials cost more money, this of course will be figured into the price of the finished product. Secondly, if people have adequate clothing that isn't worn out, then why would they bother buying the newest fashion trend from those sickenly peppy people from Old Navy, GAP, Banana Republic (all owned by the same parent company, just so you know)?

Don't tell me how to get there, just tell me how we got here!

One of my first autobiographical memories revolves around public television. I know that a lot is being filled in with details that I remember from later in life, but I have full confidence that I can sort what was there and what was re-constructed. Besides, even if you wanted to tease it apart, you couldn't get a collaborative method of confirming the details seeing as how grandma passed over 5 years ago, but I digress.

When I was 3, I was dropped off at my grandmother's house at somewhere around 5:30 to 6 in the morning. Anyway, grandma sat me in my little red rocking chair (that was my chair, no one else even thought about sitting in that chair) turned on this then relatively new 70-something model color TV. For some reason it was set to Channel 2, the PBS channel for our little corner of the world, mostly rural Northeast Mississippi. The letter for the day on Sesame Street was the letter 'M'. The name stuck...for several months afterward, PBS became 'M's', and everything on PBS was M's. Even if it wasn't a kids show, I watched it. PBS opened my young imagination to space creatures and Dr. Who...to news information on McNeil-Lehrer Newshour...yes, at 4 I was watching McNeil-Lehrer simply because I thought that Big Bird, Bert & Ernie, and the Cookie Monster were right around the corner. Elmo didn't come onto the scene until my cousins 7 and 9 years younger than me, respectively, started watching PBS. We had Mr. Rodgers, The Land of Make Believe, The Letter People...man I loved The Letter People, and the Art Chest, Pennywise, and the list goes on.

This is why public television and radio are so important to me. I think they were some of the best gifts this society has ever given to me. That crazy physics guy, Reading Rainbow, NOVA, Now w/ Bill Moyers: this is quality programming, and for all the good it has done me, I would hope that Congress would not remove any funding from the corporation for public broadcasting. Unfortunately, it does look like 100 million bucks will be slashed from the CPB budget forcing small rural stations like the ones I had affectionately called 'M's' to close their doors, and stations in larger markets, like the Memphis PBS station that we were able to get fairly well, will have to rely more heavily on privately owned corporations to keep their doors open.

I find it very sad that the next generation might not have that experience I had when I was 3, and for what? A billion dollar a week War in Iraq? So you could pay for 10 years worth of current funding for the CPB for what is spent in one week in Iraq?! It seems that you would want to keep public and educational broadcasts on the air for everyone's full access simply because they better educated the American public is about the rest of the world, the more they'll realize that there is no 'us vs. them'...it's just us, just humanity. Education is the essesntial element. Education extinguishes fear. Fear is the mind killer.

Education also serves to make you a better citizen. After all, remember that old adage about a good democracy: It must have an informed citizentry. How could public television, the form of television that has stayed most true to the original mandate of the FCC, be a bad thing unless of course it was speaking truth to power and doing a good job with independent media coverage. You see, fear can only operate when things are unknown. The better educated you are, the less you will fear. The more of your world you will be able to explain with your own theories based on what pieces of information you have sub-consciously deemed necessary to store in your brain.

So here's a funny story...a classic one you might say: So, on Monday night, I set my alarm to 5:10 am so I could wake up in time to get to the station at 6:00 with some ease and relaxation. While I had set the time for the alarm to go off, I hadn't set the alarm trigger. So I woke up, at 5:45 am, 15 minutes before the show, and somehow I made it to the station by 5 till 6am. Thank the universe that the streets were relatively empty and I didn't get caught behind a bunch of red lights.

Wow, what a day last Thursday was. I sucessfully defended my Master's Thesis. Now all that's left are the committe's revisions, the thesis office's revisions, and any the remainder of the red tape from the University keeping me from the piece of paper saying that I've earned that M.S. degree. I should just tell 'em that seeing as how I'm the Hippie from Mississippi, I already know about a MS degree and they should just forget the formalities and hand the paper to me, but because I'm such a good sport, I'll play by their rules.

When the genetically altered fruit fly was released into the observation chamber, it did what these breeders par excellence tend to do. It pursued a waiting virgin female. It gently tapped the girl with its leg, played her a song (using wings as instruments) and, only then, dared to lick her - all part of standard fruit fly seduction.

The observing scientist looked with disbelief at the show, for the suitor in this case was not a male, but a female that researchers had artificially endowed with a single male-type gene.

That one gene, the researchers are announcing today in the journal Cell, is apparently by itself enough to create patterns of sexual behavior - a kind of master sexual gene that normally exists in two distinct male and female variants.

In a series of experiments, the researchers found that females given the male variant of the gene acted exactly like males in courtship, madly pursuing other females. Males that were artificially given the female version of the gene became more passive and turned their sexual attention to other males.

"We have shown that a single gene in the fruit fly is sufficient to determine all aspects of the flies' sexual orientation and behavior," said the paper's lead author, Dr. Barry Dickson, senior scientist at the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna. "It's very surprising.

"What it tells us is that instinctive behaviors can be specified by genetic programs, just like the morphologic development of an organ or a nose."

The results are certain to prove influential in debates about whether genes or environment determine who we are, how we act and, especially, our sexual orientation, although it is not clear now if there is a similar master sexual gene for humans.

Still, experts said they were both awed and shocked by the findings. "The results are so clean and compelling, the whole field of the genetic roots of behavior is moved forward tremendously by this work," said Dr. Michael Weiss, chairman of the department of biochemistry at Case Western Reserve University. "Hopefully this will take the discussion about sexual preferences out of the realm of morality and put it in the realm of science."

He added: "I never chose to be heterosexual; it just happened. But humans are complicated. With the flies we can see in a simple and elegant way how a gene can influence and determine behavior."

The finding supports scientific evidence accumulating over the past decade that sexual orientation may be innately programmed into the brains of men and women. Equally intriguing, the researchers say, is the possibility that a number of behaviors - hitting back when feeling threatened, fleeing when scared or laughing when amused - may also be programmed into human brains, a product of genetic heritage.

"This is a first - a superb demonstration that a single gene can serve as a switch for complex behaviors," said Dr. Gero Miesenboeck, a professor of cell biology at Yale.

Dr. Dickson, the lead author, said he ran into the laboratory when an assistant called him on a Sunday night with the results. "This really makes you think about how much of our behavior, perhaps especially sexual behaviors, has a strong genetic component," he said.

All the researchers cautioned that any of these wired behaviors set by master genes will probably be modified by experience. Though male fruit flies are programmed to pursue females, Dr. Dickson said, those that are frequently rejected over time become less aggressive in their mating behavior.

When a normal male fruit fly is introduced to a virgin female, they almost immediately begin foreplay and then copulate for 20 minutes. In fact, Dr. Dickson and his co-author, Dr. Ebru Demir of the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology, specifically chose to look for the genetic basis of fly sexual behavior precisely because it seemed so strong and instinctive and, therefore, predictable.

Scientists have known for several years that the master sexual gene, known as fru, was central to mating, coordinating a network of neurons that were involved in the male fly's courtship ritual. Last year, Dr. Bruce Baker of Stanford University discovered that the mating circuit controlled by the gene involved 60 nerve cells and that if any of these were damaged or destroyed by the scientists, the animal could not mate properly. Both male and female flies have the same genetic material as well as the neural circuitry required for the mating ritual, but different parts of the genes are turned on in the two sexes. But no one dreamed that simply activating the normally dormant male portion of the gene in a female fly could cause a genetic female to display the whole elaborate panoply of male fruit fly foreplay.

Well, the chaos that is my life has slowed down just enough that I won't be going out of my mind for a while. I finish editing my thesis next week, defend it the Thursday after that, and move on to the next big research gig.

Real ID Bill passes through Senate

Well, you can go ahead and sign away a little more of your freedom. Yesterday, the Senate voted for a military spending bill which had a steaming load of christo-fascist crap attached. This legislation, known as the Real ID Act will completely change the way government issued ID's will be handled. States will have to conform to a federally mandated administration of ID's and Driver's Licenses which includes not allowing immigrants to get a driver's license even if they show technical proficiency behind the wheel. This is the bill of goods that was sold to the American public...Lock, stock, and barrel.

What supporters of the Real ID Act don't tell you is that it will require that all personal information from state databases be turned over to a central federal database. Putting citizen's personal information into one central database creates a system in which identity thieves could know more about you than even you know! For them to do so, they would only need to hack into one database instead of several as they have to do today. Gee, thanks, Republican-controlled federal government, once I lose all social security money in the stock market from this privitization scheme, I get to lose my identity to some 80 year old Joe Schmoe that wants to run up a huge bill on my credit cards so he can pay for his medicine because your irresponsible handling of that in which this country put it's trust, your judgment in governance.

Yeah, good going, chief. For the record, I would like to re-iterate that I voted against this regime in 2004 for some of these very reasons. For me to say I told you so would be like hitting a guy with glasses, but I DID tell you so.

What a hell of a week last week. The flows of the universe know I'm glad that's all taken care of. I had one hell of a relaxing weekend. Now I only have one collaborative paper left and the semester is over. Leaving me with the task I've been wanting to complete all along, my thesis and the M.S. degree so I can say I've reached that milestone, and I'm ready to get deeper into the research. Finish that in June, then get the degree in August.

Now that a lot of obstacles have been cleared, it seems that the news has been flying right by me...(Insert Chef's voice here)bad stuff's goin' down, children.(Close Chef's voice here). We'll get caught up this week, and who knows, I might be playing some get out of town songs.

HEAVY THINKING

It started out innocently enough: I began to think at parties now and then -- to loosen up. Inevitably, though, one thought led to another, and soon I was more than just a social thinker. I began to think alone --"to relax," I told myself--but I knew it wasn't true. Thinking became more and more important to me, and finally I was thinking all the time. I began to think on the job. I knew that thinking and employment don't mix, but I couldn't stop myself. I began to avoid friends at lunchtime so I could read Thoreau and Kafka. I would return to the office dizzied and confused, asking, "What is it exactly we are doing here?" Things weren't going so great at home either. One evening I had turned off the TV and asked my husband about the meaning of life. He spent that night at his mother's.

I soon had a reputation as a heavy thinker. One day the boss called me in. He said, "Shirley, I like you, and it hurts me to say this, but your thinking has become a real problem. If you don't stop thinking on the job, you'll have to find another job." This gave me a lot to think about.

I went home early after my conversation with the boss. "Honey," I confessed, "I've been thinking--"

"I know you've been thinking," he said, "and I want a divorce!"

"But honey, surely it's not that serious." "It is serious," he said, lower lip aquiver. "You think as much as college professors, and college professors don't make any money, so if you keep on thinking, we won't have any money!"

"That's a faulty syllogism," I said impatiently, and he began to cry. I'd had enough. "I'm going to the library," I snarled as I stomped out the door. I headed for the library, in the mood for some Nietzsche, with NPR on the radio. I roared into the parking lot and ran up to the big glass doors. They didn't open. The library was closed. To this day, I believe that a Higher Power was looking out for me that night. As I sank to the ground, clawing at the unfeeling glass, whimpering Zarathustra, a poster caught my eye. "Friend, is heavy thinking ruining your life?" it asked. You probably recognize that line. It comes from the standard Thinker's Anonymous poster. Which is why I am what I am today: a recovering thinker.

I never miss a TA meeting. At each meeting, we watch a noneducational video; last week it was "Dumb and Dumber." Then we share an experience about how we avoided thinking since the last meeting. I still have my job, and things are a lot better at home. Life just seemed...easier, somehow, as soon as I stopped thinking.

Soon, I will be able to vote Republican.

Aggies looking to Gig Em? Try Australia!

Ok, so for those who don't know, Texas A&M has a little cultish thing going on with their school spirit. The traditions range from reverant to just plain wacky. One of the just plain wacky ones is the term Gig 'Em. From my understanding, Gig 'Em came from yelling these words out while stabbing frogs with a sharp stick.

Now fast-forward to 2005. In Australia, the government is trying to get rid of a toxic toad called the Cane Toad, that was imported into the country 70 years ago to control a beetle problem. Now, Australia is over-run with Cane Toads. One solution suggested by the Australian government is to have citizens go out and smash the frogs with sticks, lumber, or bats. Granted, the U.S. has good relations with Australia, but if we exported some Aggies to Australia to Gig the Cane Toads, it would demonstrate that the U.S. is capable of international gestures of goodwill to mankind.

Only one question remains: What happens when Australia is overrun with Aggies?

A moment of silence for Pope John Paul II

Ok, so I'm not a Catholic. I never agreed with the Pope's stance on gay marriage or contraception, but at the end of the day, the man was a human being, and his passing from humanity into something greater should be recognized.

As a question of intellectual curiosity, I have a question for my Catholic readers and listeners. How would the Catholic Church's structure stand if the Pope had slipped into a coma? Again, I mean no disrespect to the Catholic Church, but for a religion that places so much trust in one person, you have to admit that the human body is a frail conduit to God, at best. I posed this question to a few of my friends, none of which were Catholic, and we're all really confused. Does Jesus take over for a little while? Is there a Vice Pope? I mean, we just want to know how this works, just for personal edification's sake.

This site is growing by leaps and bounds. When I first started using it, they only had the music map, now you can search for movies based on title, director, or actor. The animations are pretty tight too. This another way data from a search engine could be express the collections it finds to match your search terms. After all, aren't lists boring? They're also a very artificial way to abstract the way knowledge is organized. That is, lists are more mechanical than organic. So one hypothesis could be that the more naturalistic the information is expressed might have some bearing on how the information is recalled.

Anyway, this is a really cool site.

Well folks, it was a great show. We made up for our losses from last week, but things could have been a whole lot more lucrative if you know what I mean. Local folks, if you pledged some support this past couple of weeks to a different show, then your pledge was "gratefully" appreciated. I can tell you that there are new engineering changes at the station all the time and it's always amazing to come in to see what's new this week. This thing is about to get big. That's my prediction and I'm sticking to it, and you can help realize this vision by calling in and pledging your support either tonight or tomorrow through midnight.

Unfortunately, everything they tell you about a pledge drive is difficult to apply to my show at the best of times. Forget short songs. Pitching is equally long winded, admittedly, because I care a lot about the station and I want to make sure that opinion is explicitly expressed. This station is one of the few pillars in my life that keeps me sane as an ultraviolet person in an infrared world (and if you got that, you are indeed a scholar and a gentleperson!), but just like what Jerry sang in Crazy Fingers, "But I try...oooohhh, I try!"

In the Spearhead song Everyone Deserves Music, Michael Franti tells the story of the creation of the first human being. This story comes from the Iranian poet Hafez.

The first human was sculpted out of mud by the Creator. There was a soul that was flying around, and the soul was able to fly anywhere, and the soul was so happy because it was FREE! But the Creator said, "Soul, I have big plans for you. I want you to go into this body of mud so the first human can come to life." Do Republicans know where does the buck stops?

Remember when our primary reason for invading Iraq was to root out the Saddam Hussain's WMD stash?

No one in the Bush Administration seems to remember. A report by a presidential commission on the WMD debacle has turned up what most anti-war protestors in this country and around the world have been screaming for the last 2 years. The intelligence on WMDs in Iraq was "dead wrong", and suggests that the Bush administration was not to blame for sounding the gongs of war, rather it was the faulty intelligence. In statistics, we learn that a conservative estimate of significance requires a larger test statistic. In other words, the conservative estimate requires more sources of evidence to refute the null hypothesis (i.e. no WMDs in Iraq) vs. the alternative hypothesis (i.e. there are WMDs in Iraq). Isn't Bush a "compassionate conservative"?

This brings up a very important question that most so-called conservatives don't take time to contemplate, "What makes this current set of Republicans conservative?"

This current set of Republicans are not statistically conservative in intelligence estimates, otherwise they would have consulted many other international intelligence agencies to get a complete picture of the WMD situation (or lack therof) in Iraq.

Modern day Republicans are not ecologically conservative in perserving our natural resources.

Today's Republicans are not fiscally conservative as evidenced by the tremedous debt that continues to accumulate for our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to pay.

Even on the areas were they appear to be the most conservative, the intellectual and social realms, the Republican conservative rhetoric machine breaks down. Republican lawmakers continue to claim to be members of a "culture of life", yet deny all Americans a living wage, send our young people to die in foreign theatres created by the oligarchy of large multi-national corporations, and deny quality health care for all citizens, not just those that are fortunate enough to have enough funds to buy into privitized health insurance which can range from superior to mediocre depending on how much money one is willing to invest. Are not all of these issues central to a "culture of life"? What about pollution of our air and water? After all, promotion of a "culture of life" should also include access to the most basic of requirements for sustaining life: clean air and water. Where are these moral high grounders when it comes to exploiting the people of other countries so that we have the freedom to ride our giant vehicles into swamps and mudholes for pleasure? Most likely, they are behind the wheel.

Intellectual conservativism has always been the bane of humanity's advancement. Intellectual conservatism has brought us such gems as the Spanish Inquisition, The Geo-Centric Universe, The Flat Earth Theory, and all sorts of despotic regimes including Nazi Germany. While intellectual conservatism doesn't eliminate all questions from the public discourse, it does seem to eliminate the most important question: Why? Without the ability to understand why something is happening in the world, it becomes virtually impossible to get a full picture of the situation. Earlier this week, intellectual conservatism was brought to the table when 3 people were removed from one of President Bush's town hall meetings about privitizing social security because they rode to the meeting in a car that had a bumper sticker condemning the actions of our government in Iraq. Open dialogue considering all viewpoints is necessary to break the strangle hold intellectual conservatism has on the mind of this country. Unfortunately, until we come to a dialogue with ideas instead of ideologies, the United States' intellectual promise will continue to be marginalized.

So let me get this right, we're more worried about Michael Jackson, Terri Schiavo, Gay Marriage, and whether our favorite Survivor makes it on to the next round than we are about the state of the planet thanks in part to human intervention. I'm not saying that I'm innocent of doing my share of damage to the planet. I humbly admit that I am at fault for several tons of greenhouse gases in the air thanks to this modern life all of us have to fit into one way or another. I shudder to think that mankind will never know it's full potential because it's flittering away it's future on the riches of this world...on the shiney stuff. However, there are some of us that are primed and ready to make a difference. We recognize that a cup of clean water and a breath of fresh air are some of the greatest treasures on the planet because everyone can share in them. Now the materially rich want to comodify our air and drinking water. What is that, people? It's laughable, but then again, so is the ownership of land? The earth that you say you own could just as easily turn on you and make you the bitch. Just like the ownership of an idea. After all, if you keep your ideas to yourself and never share them, then what good do they do? At that point, they're only good enough to atrophy and rot, not to further the ever expanding human consciousness.

Ok, let's snap back to reality. Where did I hear this information. Well the first place I heard about it was on BBC News this morning. After doing a little poking around, I became painfully aware that unless you happened to hear about this story through the British Press (i.e. BBC or one of London's Newspapers) you would have never been aware of this study. Here is yet another example in the ongoing drama that is craptastic news. It is really sad when we have to go halfway around the world to get any degree of balanced news about this country. The BBC was also the only broadcasting outlet that reported on the UNOCAL pipeline deal in Afghanistan and how Hamid Karzai, former UNOCAL executive, got to his previous post as interim president of Afghanistan and eventually led to his election as the official head of a reconstituted (with U.S. Yes-Men and Warlords growing Opium) Afghan government. Freedom on the march indeed. A weak press leads to propoganda, jingoism, and flat-out ignorance. In a word, craptastic.

So, instead of paying attention to this news story that might lead people to think twice about buying that gas-guizzling SUV or big duely work truck for getting to and from work every day, the corporate news gives us "psychic" John Edward to tell us that Terri Schiavo is well aware of what's going on around her. OH FOR FUCK'S SAKE ALREADY! I remember when psychics were written off as a bunch of hokey, supersticious hoo-hah, a bunch of smoke and mirrors, yet here's a "reputable news organization" parading this sideshow out to boost the ratings and hypnotize a few more with that all to familiar drone..."Your leaders know what's best for you. To question them is to question your very existance. You are a good 'merican, aren't ya, son? Good. So what ever George W. Bush says must be true because he's Jesus' little brother." News Flash, Mr. Fair and Balanced: I'm not buying it. Now put on the Simpsons and stop pretending to tell the news to me.

I owe everyone a big apology.

Last week's show was the first of the two Loose Logic Set fund drive shows. It was also the first show to officially wish KEOS a Happy 10th Birthday. I was hoping to sing happy birthday to KEOS, and then launch right into the midnight rant. This week's rant was cut short by a request to repeat the happy birthday song. Rants take quite a bit out of me. If I don't keep them going, then I just drop it. Last week's rant was, unfortunately, cut short. It's really too bad because I would have loved to have delved into the Schiavo Case a little bit more. I feel that I let the station down because there were no funds collected during this show. This is the first show that has ever happened to me. As a result, I got a little upset with you folks. I know I shouldn't have, but if KEOS is as big a part of your life as it is for me, then you'd be upset to know that for the 3 hours we were on the air last week there was nothing, zilch, zero, nada, and kaput! Anyway, please accept the apology of your kind and friendly Hippie From Mississippi.

That was quite possibly one of the hardest shows I've ever had to do...even the one when I was hung over was easier than this one because while I got no pledges, I got calls, but they were inconsistent requests, one for Dave Matthews and one for Foo Fighters. When I got the one for Dave Matthews, I thought it was my friend Frank pulling a prank. Foo Fighters, while they are a good band, do not fall anywhere near the genre of jam band or political rock that has become the brand of the Loose Logic Set. Dave Matthews on the other hand, could be considered in the jam band genre, but he's more custie, schwagg, frat boy side of the jam band universe. A black hole that I don't like to steer the show toward that much.

Lastly, I have a challenge to you, the listeners, for this week. Last week, one volunteer came in shortly after 1 am to drop off stuff from the party over at the 7F Lodge. I told this valuable friend of KEOS that I was kinda bummed that I didn't bring in any cash to the station, to which this person replied, "Well, Randy, look at your audience, they're a bunch of hippies, and hippies are notorious freeloaders." Are you gonna let someone get away with calling you that? I wouldn't if I were you. My challenge to you is to provide me with evidence to the contrary.

We can do this. You can do this!

Terri Schiavo Case: What It Means To You.

Unless you've been hiding your head in the sand over the past few days, you have probably heard something about this Terri Schiavo Case. As you probably know, the situation pits a brain damaged woman in a vegetative state between a husband that wants to end his wife's suffering and a loving mom and dad that don't want to lose their daughter. What hasn't been widely reported is that this case has been on-going for 15 years and has been heard by 20 judges (state and federal, Including US Supreme Courts). In the years that this situation has been in the courtroom, all 20 judges have agreed with the husband, Michael Schiavo, to remove the feeding tube and allow his wife to pass with mercy.

This past weekend, an emergency session of Congress was called to keep the feeding tube in Terri Schiavo. President Bush flew in from Crawford for this bill. Within 20 minutes of the vote from the Congress, Bush signed this into law. This forced the case back into court, where a federal judge has ruled that the feeding tube should be removed. Right now, the parents' attorneys are appealing to the 11th Circuit Court in Atlanta.

So what does all of this mean to you and me? Well, first of all, I think this case speaks volumes about the need for a living will that stipulates the terms and conditions under which you wish to be disconnected from any life-support machines, if need for those machines should arise.

Secondly, we are often told that bureaucracy gets in the way of so many bills getting passed by the Federal government. The Schiavo case gives us evidence that these blockheads can put together legislation quickly, efficiently, and without much debate if it suits their political purposes. Do you think any environmental law would be passed through the system like an ex-lax brownie traveling at 100 miles per hour through your colon (i.e. the way the Schiavo legislation was passed)? In this administration, only if it was to further reduce the environmental protections afforded by the laws that remain on the books to protect our environment for future generations.

Third, I don't know about you, but I find it more than a little creepy that the federal government can tailor bills around an individual in this country.

In situations like Mrs. Schiavo's, where there is no living will, there are a couple of questions that need to be answered to determine whether a person should continue to live on life support or if she should be removed from life support and let nature take its entropic course.

Will the patient be able to return to a conscious state?
What will the quality of life be for this person?

In Terri's case, after 15 years, her internal organs have begun to shut down and degrade, including that organ that would bring her back to a conscious state, her brain. In mid-1996 CAT scans confirmed that her cerebral cortext has been severely damaged (i.e. beyond the healing abilities of modern medical science). Even if stem cell research was readily available in this country, it would not be at the level to return any cognitive ability to a patient as deeply damaged as Mrs. Schiavo. This should have never been an issue put before the courts or Congress.

How does this play into the sanctity of marriage? After all, once married, if a person falls into a comatose state, the spouse becomes the guardian of that individual, and, if worse comes to worse, the person to make the final call on keeping life-support on or to shut it off. According to Congress, they are the final arbitrators of life and death, not the loving spouse of a comatose patient. Gay and Lesbian couples trying to get marriage rights, I know this is one of the reasons you wanted the ability to marry. If these attacks on marriage rights continue to persist, then it could get to the point where straight couples will have the same rights as gay couples instead of the other way around.

I'll close this post with the following issue. It is fortunate that Mrs. Schiavo is not in Texas. In 1999, Gov. George W. Bush signed the Texas Futile Care Law into Texas Law. Under this law, doctors and hospitals can refuse to maintain life support of any patient, even against the will of the next of kin, if the patient does not have health insurance or any other way to pay for the care in exchange to tranfering the patient to a county hospital. Thus, the burden for maintaining life support falls to the taxpayer, not to the expert (i.e. the physician). Might I add that this appears to be a real slick way of getting out of a lawsuit. All of this coming from the same guy who later on said in this year's State Of The Union Address, "human life should not be a commodity".

It's the hypocrisy, stupid.

It takes a little while to load this one, but man, is it ever worth it! So you got this DEA agent telling kids to be afraid of drugs and just being a general baligerant DEA tool. He starts telling the kids in this seminar that this is the kind of gun that 50 cent uses...he then proceeds to tell the children that he is the only one qualified to handle a gun like that in that classroom when all of the sudden...BANG! bullet right in the foot! Not to seem like a total hypocrit, he continues his lecture on how guns are dangerous and motions for his assistant to hand him a rifle. After the kids saw what just happened to this guy, blood gushing from the wound and all, they respectfully yell to the DEA agent to put the weapon down.

Fuckin' classic. Now do you understand why the "War on Drugs" is a stupendous boondoggle?

I also featured this show last night as a belated birthday wish to Phil Lesh, Bassist of the Grateful Dead, who turned 65 years old on Tuesday, the 15th. Happy Birthday, Phil! But that wasn't the end of the night...not for us at least. Since the show spanned time between 9 PM and nearly 1 am Friday morning, the weekly Midnight Rant was postponed till the end of the Phil & Friends show. Last night's midnight rant was specifically about the failure of an amendment to the fiscal year 2006 Federal budget which would have stricken any language concerning exploratory drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for oil. As has been stated on this blog, the amendment failed by a narrow margin: 49 yea to 51 nay. With the passage of this budget almost certain given a right-wing strangle hold on both the House of Representatives and the Presidency, and a considerablely un-friendly grip on the throat of the U.S. Senate, we launched into a discussion about a future with conservation, sustainable/renewable fuels that function the same as the fuels we use today, but without the emissions that the fuels of today secrete into our atmosphere. In addition to the news stories that have just pissed me off over the course of the past week, look forward to a critical commentary about mainstream news in America today.

ANWR: The Oilman's Baked Alaska

Well, it's got the green light from the Senate. ANWR is now up for grabs. Republicans put it in as a provision of the Fiscal Year 2006 budget. Democrats under Sen. Cantwell proposed an amendment to this budget to strike out any language concerning drilling in the Artic National Wildlife Refuge. The amendment failed 49-51. Just saw it on "The Span 2". With a strongly contolled Republican House and a Republican Presidency, well, it's fair to say that ANWR is fair game.

For some reason, I'm reminded of Gil Scott-Heron's song about these dark times: Winter In America.

There are three occupations that make me completely uneasy: cops, millitary, and clowns. There's a parallel that binds all three, but I will let you take a stab at figuring that out. I'm not terrified of these occupations, there's just something that makes me a little more guarded around these folks than any other group.

And since when has being a tattle-tale to the government been an honorable profession. I suppose that the folks at the intelligence agencies in this nation would tell me that it's a fine and rewarding profession, but they're cops...and we've already gone over how I feel about cops in general.

Clowns, I'm sorry to do this, but I'm lumping politicians and evangalists in with you guys. This is because they use cheap tricks for a good laugh all the time...you know, like clowns.

Now before any cops, soldiers, or clowns get upset and start heading to my door with torches and pitchforks, let me make it perfectly clear that I've known good people in all these areas, and if you come to me as a human being needing help from his or her fellow human being, I'll be on it, but I'm just telling you that your profession creeps me out.

NIMBYism draws out the hypocrisy

For those of you that don't know, NIMBY is an acronym for Not In My Back Yard. Got it? Good, because it's going to play a big part in this post.

So the news story you should get if you click on the title for this. Six thousand suburban Salt Lake City citizens had to be evacuated because a rail car that was carrying corrosive acid though this pristene, white bread neighborhood was not appropriately equipped to contain this acid. I'm not saying that these folks don't have the right to complain about this distribution of deadly chemicals into their neighborhood...but...

Consider that the margin of victory for Bush in Utah. Slightly over 71% of Utah citizens that got out to the polls voted for George W. Bush and his corporate croney administration that just cut back on EPA spending by 500 million dollars for the next fiscal year. Now the EPA would have been one of the government agencies responsible for checking this rail car to see if it was suitable to carry highly corrosive acids such as nitric and hydrochloric acid.

So congrats to Utah, for voting for looser domestic environmental protections because they didn't want gays and lesbians to marry or thought that this puppet, George W. Bush, would keep them safe from the terrorists. C'mon Utah, you've got desert, rocks, a land locked salt lake, and mormons. In the country of the terrorists origins, they can get three of these four easily. Expansive deserts, rocks are common the world over, the Dead Sea makes the Great Salt Lake look like a mud puddle. That only leaves Mormons, and I don't know about you, but I just don't trust stealthy cultists that look like they came from The Villiage of the Damned.

Ok, so I'm generalizing about Utah. Sorry, progressive Utahites, I know that there are a handful of you out there. I have to defend a similar kind of flack here in Texas. The point is, those that vote to give away their freedom in exchange for safety are ultimately bound to lose both freedom and safety.

I was just thinking, a diesel engine can burn biodiesel fuel, and there are battery powered hybrids...why not combine the two. I mean, it's not completely emmission free, but hell, it's pretty close when used correctly. Now put all that into the body of the classic 1965 microbus...or consider the dymaxion design...and sell it like hotcakes.

A standard diesel can run on biodiesel, nothing special about that. If somebody would start giving small businesses the same kind of discounts for hybrids that they used to give for huge ass SUVs (yes, last year was the final year for that tax break), then you would see more of them out there, which would up demand and start bringing the price down...it would take a little while, but I'm saying give it 5 years, and you'll start seeing the things all over the place.

I got a new Dylan show in the mail on Thursday so while I was getting ready for the show, I decided to dedicate the first hour to Bob Dylan...taking a sample from 3 different eras. From the acoustic days with a show from The Royal Albert Hall in London in 1966, An electric set from 1976, and finally a collaboration with the Grateful Dead from 1989.

We didn't have any playlist sheets so I had to make my own setlist sheet.

Wow!

That was my first impression when I saw that David Rovics, Mr. "Democracy Now! w/ a guitar", will be performing at the kindest, hippest, and all around coolest venue in the B/CS "metroplex": Cafe Revolution.

This Tuesday evening at 6:00 PM. If you want to hear politically progressive charged music, then I highly recommend coming out to hear David Rovics play.
