My Summer Vacation (Part 4)

So here's the last installment of my summer vacation. I went to Chicago to present the conceptual combination research I've been working on for the past year. Conferences are to Psychologists like Festivals are to Deadheads. All kinds of great presentations and posters. I got plenty of great comments from people at the poster sessions. The cool thing was I was a virtual unknown, but I was among the giants of the field. The best part: the giants liked our work!

I took in the town some while I was there, but I was grading papers most of the time. It was a liberal oasis! Obama and Kerry stickers all over the place. I felt really comfortable walking in town all day and all night. In addition to the conference, I got to see and tape Umphrey's McGee. A piece of advice: Do your best to get to a jam band's home town shows. They rock even more than usual because they're playing to a home crowd.

I flew out of Dallas to get to Chicago. Saturday (7/31) was an overcast morning in Chicago. We were above the clouds at 30,000 feet before the pilot took us down. It got me to thinking...there's always sunshine above the clouds. What does that mean? Quite simply, no matter what bad stuff might be happening in your life, you can rise above it and see a better day.

My Summer Vacation (Part 2)

Getting back from a festival is always a let down. You've been in this magical place where people don't give you shit for smoking or drinking or eating anything you damn well please. This year, I came back with something extra: my recordings. I went home first. My folks were kinda upset that I'd grown my hair even longer and a full beard. Granted, I hadn't had a shower for like, a week, so my hair was all over the place. I'll admit that I looked like a damn sasquatch. Anyway, once I had a shower and combed through it, they were ok with it. I had to hide it from my grandfather though. Mom thought that it wouldn't be good for him to see me like this. It's just hair. Hell, the only reason we cut it is because it was a good practice for hand to hand combat back in the days of the Roman Empire. Seeing as how I'm not looking to fight anyone, I don't think it should matter if I decide to get a crew cut or grow my hair so thick that I look like cousin it.

After moochin' off my folks for a week, I came back to College Station. I was just in time for Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11. I didn't think it would show here. After all, this is College Station: Home of the George H.W. Bush Library and the Lowry "Clear Channel" Mays Business School. Why would they show something so radical as a Michael Moore movie? Well, it was here on opening day! We went to the 7 pm showing and had to sit at the very front. I hate sitting at the front. All the heads on the screen are distorted. After about an hour, my visual system had adjusted and all the heads on the screen looked ok. It was an enjoyable film, but you know, I already knew all the facts that Moore presented. Between BBC News and Democracy Now!, most of the information in Fahrenheit was a re-hash. Nonetheless, it was entertaining.

My Summer Vacation (Part 1)

It's been a little while, but there's been quite a bit going on round here. With all good things, it's best to start at the beginning and work to the end. So after classes let out in the spring semester, I got approval to run my master's thesis experiments. I was told that my progress in grad school was exceptional, and that I should expect to present my Master's Thesis in the Spring 2005. Spring 2005? Geezus H. Christ on a pogo stick! I was totally expecting to take till the fall of 2005 to finish that, but if they think I can do it, then I can do it. I'll have plenty of participants once the fall semester starts.

In June, I went to Bonnaroo! I was part of a caravan that started out of College Station, TX at about 5 pm Wednesday evening. We ended up getting to Manchester, TN at 7 pm. It was a great weekend, but it had its difficulties. First, it was hell to get my mic stand into the "taper-friendly" festival grounds. What kind of facists are these people!? I mean, we all know that mic stands are part of the taper's equipment. I was able to get it into the grounds every day by just being reasonable.

It rained on Saturday and Sunday. I was leaving The Dead show and my foot managed to find a 2' deep mud hole. My poor cell phone died instantly under a deluge of watery muck. I was able to tape quite a bit on Friday, and got 1 show on Saturday. Sunday was a different story. I was setting up in the exact same spot that I had been at for the Robert Randolph Show only 8 hours earlier (Robert Randolph ended at 3 am and I was setting up again around 11 am), and this dumbass security guard tells me that my mic stand wasn't allowed in. He gets his supervisor...man my taping sucked that day. So much so that I ended up erasing the stuff I got on Sunday. It just wasn't worth it, ya know?

I had a magic mushroom that I was saving for the Trey Anastasio show, but this guy told me that some kids died from poison mushrooms. Well, with that kinda rumor floating in my head, there's no way I'd touch that mushroom. I mean, even if it was ok, my trip wouldn't be good. I'd be freaking out about whether or not I was dying. Not good, ya know? Anyway, I didn't even make it to the Trey show. We got back to camp at around 7 pm. The rain was pouring down pretty heavy so I decided to crawl in my car and wait it out. I ended up falling asleep and I didn't wake up till 5 am Monday morning. I needed that rest too 'cause I was driving back to my folks house. As I was heading out, I picked up a hitchhiker. He gave me 50 bucks to get him to Nashville. I was more than happy to oblige. Sanchez, if you're reading this, thanks.
