Finally, a Christian speaking truth to power

As I was at the station this morning, I picked up a print out of this e-mail. I'm sure it's making its away around on e-mail groups, but I know I haven't seen it. Anyway, I'm passing it on to you.

Dr. Robin Meyers , Minister of Mayflower Congregational Church in Oklahoma City, OK.
Oklahoma University Peace Rally
11/14/04

As some of you know, I am minister of Mayflower Congregational Church in Oklahoma City, and professor of Rhetoric at Oklahoma City University. But you would most likely have encountered me on the pages of the Oklahoma Gazette, where I have been a columnist for six years, and hold the record for the most number of angry letters to the editor.

Tonight, I join the ranks of theose who are angry, because I have watched as the faith I love has been taken over by fundementalists who claim to speak for Jesus, but whose actions are anything but Christian.

We've heard a lot lately about so-called "moral values" as having swing the election to President Bush. Well, I'm a great believed in moral values, but we need to have a discussion, all over this country, about exactly what constitutes a moral value -- I mean what are we talking about?

Because we don't get to make them up as we go along, especially not if we are people of faith. We have an inherited tradition of what is right and wrong, and moral is as moral does.

Let me give you a of the reasons why I take issues with those in power who claim moral values are on their side:

  • When you start a war on false pretenses, and then act as if your deceptions are justified because you are doing God's will, and that your critics are either unpatriotic or lacing in faith, there are some of use who have given our lives to teaching and preaching the faith who believe that is not only not moral, but immoral.
  • When you claim that Jesus is the Lord of your life, and yet fail to acknowledge that your policies ignore his essential teaching, or turn them on their head (you know, Sermon on the Mount stuff like that we must never return violence for violence and that those who live by the sword will die by the sword), you are doing something immoral
  • When you act as if the lives of Iraqi civilians are not as important as the lives of American soldiers, and refuse to even count them, you are doing something immoral.
  • When you find a way to avoid combat in Vietnam, and question the patriotism of someone who volunteered to fight, and came home a hero, you are doing something immoral.
  • When you ignore the fundemental teachings of the gospel, which says that the way the strong treat the weak is the ultimate ethical test, by giving tax breaks to the wealthiest among us so the strong will get stronger and the weak will get weaker, you are doing something immoral
  • When you wink at the torture of prisoners, and deprive so-called "enemy combatants" of the rules of the Geneva convention, which your own country helped to establish and insists that other countries follow, you are doing something immoral.
  • When you claim that the world can be divided up into the good guys and the evil doers, slice up your own nation into those who are with you, or with the terrorists -- and then launch a war which enriches your own friends and seizes control of the oil to which we are addicted, instead of helping us kick the habit, you are doing something immoral.
  • When you fail to veto a single spending bill, but ask us to pay for a war with no exit strategy and no end in sight, creating an enormous deficit that hangs like a great millstone around the necks of our children, you are doing something immoral.
  • When you cause most of the rest of the world to hate a country that was once the most loved country in the world, and act like it doesn't matter what others think of us, only what God thinks of you, you have done something immoral.
  • When you use hatred of homosexuals as a wedge issue to turn out record numbers of evangelical voters and use the Constitution as a tool of discrimination, you are doing something immoral.
  • When you favor the death penalty, and yet claim to be a follower of Jesus, who said an eye for an eye was the old way, not the way of the kingdom, you are doing something immoral.
  • When you dismantle countless environmental laws designed to protect the earth which is God's gift to us all, so that the corporations that bought you and paid for your favors will make higher profits while our children breathe dirty air and live in a toxic world, you have done something immoral. The Earth belongs to the Lord, not Halliburton.
  • When you claim that our God is bigger than their God, and that our killing is righteous, while theirs is evil, we have begun to resemble the enemy we claim to be fighting, and this is immoral. We have met the enemy, and the enemy is us.
  • When you tell people that you intend to run and govern as a "compassionate conservative," using the word which is the essence of all religious faith-compassion, and then show no compassion for anyone who disagrees with you, and no patience with those who cry to you for help, you are doing something immoral.
  • When you talk about Jesus constantly, who was a healer of the sick, but do nothing to make sure that anyone who is sick can go to see a doctor, even if she doesn't have a penny in her pocket, you are doing something immoral.
  • When you put judges on the bench who are racist, and will set women back a hundred years, and when you surround yourself with preachers who say gays ought to be killed, you are doing something immoral.
I'm tired of people thinking that because I'm a Christian, I must be a supporter of President Bush, or that because I favor civil rights and gay rights I must not be a person of faith. I'm tired of people saying I can't support the troops but oppose the war -- I heard that when I was your age, when the Vietnam War was raging. We knew that the war was wrong, and you know that this war is wrong -- the only question is how many people are going to die before these make-believe Christians are removed from power?

This country is bankrupt. The war is morally bankrupt. The claim of this administration to be a Christian is bankrupt. And the only people who can turn things around are people like you -- young people who are just beginning to wake up what is happening to them. It's your country to take. It's your faith to take back. It's your future to take back.

Don't be afraid to speak out. Don't back down when your friends begin to tell you that the cause is righteous and that the flag should be wrapped around the cross, while the rest of us keep our mouths shut. Real Christians take chances for peace. So do real Jews, and real Muslims, and real Hindus, and real Buddhists--so do all the faith traditions of the world at their heart believe one thing: life is precious. Every human being is precious. Arrogance is the opposite of faith. Greed is the opposite of charity. And believing that one has never made a mistake is the mark of a deluded man, not a man of faith.

And war -- war is the greatest failure of the human race -- and thus the greatest failure of faith.

There's and old rock & roll song, whose lyrics say it all: War, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing.

And what is the dream of the prophets? That we should study war no more, that we should beat our swords into plowshares and our spears into pruning hooks. Who would Jesus bomb, indeed? How many wars does it take to know that too many people have died? What if they gave a war and nobody came? Maybe one day we will find out.

Time to march again, my friends. Time to commit acts of civil disobedience. Time to sing, and to pray, and refuse to participate in the madness. My generation finally stopped a tragic war. You can too!

Setlists for the past week...

This week I had not only the Loose Logic Set, but I also covered Sunday Morning Sidewalk. I forgot the setlist at the station on Friday morning. I leave the station at 2 am, gimme a break! It's a wonder that I remember to get all my music outta there at 2 am. I did manage to get my music out, but left my setlist book, playlist for the show, and the recording for last week's show.

So I got all that stuff back today, and I do the only thing I could think to do with this information...share it.

Onward to the setlist!

Poisons to Human Consciousness

Last night, I got to thinking about the greater human condition and how we, as a society, form a sort of collective consciousness. If you don't believe that, then I challenge you to watch as people all head for one exit in a crowded concert hall if someone yells, "FIRE!" Some might say it's self-preservation in each individual's case. While that thought does have some merit, consider that all the people are moving toward one select exit vs. taking multiple exits out of the same area.

At one very basic level, we are part of a larger community, a larger being. Christianity talks about it in terms of the church being the bride of Christ. The level of consciousness I'm talking about exists for all...not just people who have heard and accepted the Christian faith and messege. Emerson's Oversoul might be a better way of conceptualizing it. However, thanks to the technology we have created and have very little control over (i.e. nuclear power, an ever expanding media base, corporations, etc.), the collective consciousness is at a stage of sensory overload. Being a cognitive psychology grad student, I envision the collective consciousness as a neural network in which each person is a participant neuron in a greater brain...a greater consciousness.

Given this knowledge about the brain structures and the thoughts about a greater human brain formed by our collective consciousness, the next step is to ask how different global situations would affect the greater human brain. As long as there are two human beings (or, arguably, one human being with multiple personalities), there will always be some sort of conflict over any number of issues. Conflict is ok in that sense because it keeps the system working. Creating a dialogue out of that conflict should be the greater human brain's goal so that our decision makers are able to weigh the outcomes of either side of the conflict and come to a decision about how the greater human experience should proceed.

Problems start to arise when conflict turns to war. If the analogy holds true, then the killing in war...and killing in any context...is damage to the greater human brain. Apathy and ignorance are just as damaging. After all, if you're not informed, then how can you participate in the greater discourse of how to resolve human conflict? Well...I have to hand it to folks like FOX News, Clear Channel, and Time-Warner for trying to get people to participate in the greater discourse without giving them all the information they need to make a truly informed decision. These Judas Iscariots have done their job in selling out their responsiblity to report all the news in exchange for favor with a transitory administration.

For the greater human good, the following MUST happen:

1. All views (even unpopular ones) must be represented equally.
2. War cannot be used as an easy solution to conflict resolution.
3. Critical Thinking must be infinitely more important to the education process than teaching to a state-administered test.

I'm still developing this thought. More to come later.

Setlist 1/20-21/05

I think I am sincerely addicted to the internet.

Lemme explain. My internet connection was on the blink since last Sunday. There was all kinds of gibberish going on with shorts in both the connection in my apartment and in the main switch box on the first floor. Anyway, I digress. On Friday evening I lost my connection for the entire weekend. I tried everything on my end, new NIC, reload of my system...but nothing worked. If it weren't for the Tsunami Benefit Concert yesterday, I would have lost my mind. The trouble with losing your mind is that you may not be able to find it again. Especially if you live in a cluttered environment as we all do.

Anyway, you missed a great day and night of music last night if you didn't make it out to Cafe Revolution. I have a recording of all the musical acts from 3pm to 2am. If you want a copy, let me know. Only thing is that if you weren't able to get to Cafe Revolution, I ask that you donate at least 5 bucks to the Tsunami relief effort.

Bush Administration and The Peter Principle

Peter Principle

The theory that employees within an organization will advance to their highest level of competence and then be promoted to and remain at a level at which they are incompetent.

Hmmmm...ok. You know, in the context of the Bush administration, there are two unique ways to look for it. First, you could take the position that the Peter Principle holds true in the face of the Bush Administration. Perhaps Bush could have been a good Vice President. Perhaps Cheney could have been just as good a Senator as he was a Representative. Perhaps Rumsfeld could have made a good Undersecretary of Defense.

If you took this option, you are much too generous...Perhaps you should read on a little.

The other position is to just that the Peter Principle does not hold in the face of the Bush Administration. According to the Peter Principle, Bush should not have elevated above the failed businessman that he is. Cheney and Rumsfeld wouldn't have done much better. That is to say, incompetence should never be so well rewarded as it has for this group of killers.

So...If the Peter Principle applied to the Bush Administration on Environmental Policy, then they would have never made it past garbage man.

If it applied on foreign policy, they'd be struggling with interstate commerce.

If it applied to employment, then they'd be living in a van down by the river.

However, if the Peter Principle applied to corporate croneyism, then well, you see the result.

A new Anti-War Philosophy...just slack off and play.

If you haven't noticed lately, the current administration does not pay attention to anyone in the Anti-War effort. After all, what purpose does Anti-War serve, really? I mean we put hundreds of well paid workers out of a job because they're no longer making bombs and bullets. What's gonna happen to these people? Without a war to prosecute, the numbers of enlisted soldiers is sure to go down, leaving more free time for these individuals. To coin a phrase, "Let them play Pac-Man!"

That's right, I haven't lost my head. I said Pac-Man. Think about it, EVERYONE has played Pac Man. Those that haven't played Pac Man before end up picking up the skills pretty quick and getting highly addicted to seeing how many ghosts they can swallow before the power pill runs out of juice.

So here's what I propose as a fund raiser for the Anti-War effort. Every cinder block arcade, every pizza place, every beer joint, every little podunk general store in America that has a Pac Man video game in it should host a Play for Peace Pac Man tournament. All quarters used to play the tournament go to aid the people most affected by war that would most appreciate Pac Man...children. That's right, put your quarters down for Unicef. Kinda like those little orange boxes the kids take with them to trick or treat when they really want a pail of candy.

If you think about it, Pac Man trancends all cultures and entertainment needs. It's kinda hard to aim a Rocket Propelled Granade or rig a Roadside Bomb when you're worried about getting cornered by ghosts. GHOSTS! Ghosts are the real terrorists! LET'S GET THEM, CHEW 'EM UP AND SPIT EM OUT!

Setlist 1/13-14/05

Before we get to this week's setlist, I've got a couple of announcements...

1. Trey Anastasio Band will be on Austin City Limits tonight. The show is supposed to be a recording of the band's ACL Fest performance from this past September. I have the audio if you're interested. Just leave a comment here or shoot me an e-mail and I'll get it off to you.

2. I have just recently acquired all three performances of the latest revision of the great musical experiment, Phil and Friends. These recordings are directly from the soundboard, and sound beautiful. If you want a copy of this and you have a high-speed internet connection, then you can pick it up here. Otherwise, just leave a comment on the blog or send me an e-mail and I'll get you a copy.

3. Head out to the Tsunami Relief Concert at Cafe Revoution next Sunday! Become an active global citizen without leaving your own backyard! Proceeds from the concert will go toward the Tsunami Relief effort. So come on out Next Sunday (1/23) at 3 pm.

And Now For Something Completely Different...Setlist 1/6-7/05

ASince we are now firmly entrenched into a new year, I thought it might be nice to change up the setlist report a bit. I've had a scanner for a while, but when I walked into my apartment early this moring, I saw the scanner and thought to myself, "Self, let's try something new with the blog." So here you are, setlists directly from the KEOS studios to you, the people of the Brazos
Valley and beyond. You can get a full size picture of each part of the setlist by clicking on the setlist picture.

Last night was another special 5-hour festival of fun and frivolity as I took the helm of both Brokedown Palace and Loose Logic Set to Frankenstein together a rare and different show: The Brokedown Logic Set"

So let's start with the Brokedown Palace portion of the show in which we featured the Grateful Dead album, Workingman's Dead.

Just in case you can't read my writing... Posted by Hello

Grateful Dead - Workingman's Dead

Uncle John's Band
High Time
Dire Wolf
New Speedway Boogie
Cumberland Blues
Black Peter
Easy Wind
Casey Jones

Then we used the remainder of the hour to play some outtakes from the Workingman's Dead studio sessions.

Grateful Dead - Workingman's Dead Studio Session Outtakes

Ripple
Tastebud
Mason's Children
Uncle John's Band

There's also a commercial for the album on this Outtakes disc, but since we're a non-commercial radio station, I was unable to play it, regardless of the time I decided to air it. The commercial is funny as hell because the voice over guy sounds like some radio host from a Jazz and Swing radio station in the late '40s or even the '50s. A total disconnect. Obviously made by the establisment at Warner Bros. Records and not the band, but I digress...

2nd hour of Brokedown Palace

Kevn Kinney - (Welcome To) The Sun Tangled Angel Revival - Sun Tangled Angel Revival
Mofro - Nare Sugar>Jamacian Juke Dancehall Break>Nare Sugar - Tampa, FL 11/7/03

So I ran out of space on the setlist page, and there was about 30 mins to go. I didn't want to use a whole setlist sheet for just a handfull of songs, so I picked up a scrap of paper and finished up this early morning setlist.
